Does laser hair removal work? How much does it cost?

After I hit my 40's my back became a forrest. It is itchy and embarrasing. I would spend the money to have this forrest felled, but do not want to waste thousands if it will not work. Let me know please if it works, is permanent, and how much I can expect to pay.
