Why did he check our zodiac sign compatibility?

this guy friend i know emailed me and said our zodiac signs are very compatible. the problem is, we are not dating, and i only see him as a platonic friend. we have only met up twice before, we never call each other, and all our communication is via email. he also lives in another state, so he has to drive two hours to see me and has expressed more than once that he'd like to stay the night, but i never let him. now he randomly drops a comment about how much our zodiac signs match up. is this whole zodiac thing his cutesy way to get in my pants? do guys often play the game this way and does it help promote them out of the "friend zone'?
