Installing windows xp on a laptop?

My daughter has just been givin a advent laptop however there is no operating system installed, wen i try and instal xp i get to selecting the partition and then formating and then the laptop switches itself off i no its not a power fault because the laptop stays until i switch it off n e one got n e thoughts cos im stumped thank u
